The Ladies of Oak Lane represents the 12 Panhellenic chapters at Virginia Tech and their philanthropic efforts on and off campus. Whether it be through their own national philanthropy, a local cause, university event or other chapter's philanthropy, these women spend countless hours working to better the community. The Ladies of Oak Lane highlights some of the wonderful things the Panhellenic community does both individually and collectively.

Our Mission: To enhance the perception of the Panhellenic community by showcasing chapters' philanthropic efforts.

Sister Spotlight: New Member Caroline Fowler

Potential new members have all long since ranked their parties and been corralled back on the bus to campus on that final day of recruitment.  But the excitement doesn’t stop there.  For Kappa Kappa Gamma, new members get to experience a whirlwind 8-week new member period filled with events all leading up to the main event: initiation.  The sisters of Kappa Kappa Gamma were so happy to welcome 51 eager new sisters, like Caroline Fowler, to our family.

Grandbig: Kelsey Heiter, Big: Whitney Powell, and Little:

The Ladies of Oak Lane: Bid day can be so exciting and little bit overwhelming for new members. What was Bid day like for you? How did you feel when you got your bid?
Caroline Fowler: Bid day was very exciting for me. Walking into a house where hundreds of girls are smiling, hugging you, and telling you that they’re so happy you’re there, is such a great feeling. It really felt like I was where I belonged.

TLOL: Describe the weeks leading up to initiation.  What kinds of things did you participate in to get to know the rest of your sisters?
CF:
Leading up to initiation, I went to quite a few dinners with a lot of the sisters to get to know them better. I also attended pledge class sleepovers, game nights, and craft nights.

TLOL: In Kappa we have a whole week leading up to initiation called Inspiration week. Can you talk about what all went on this week?
CF: I loved Inspiration week. The sorority had a lot of different events for the new girls to go to, like movie night, dinner, and sleepovers, all-leading up to initiation. I really felt like I got to know my pledge class a lot better.
TLOL: How were you feeling in the days leading up to initiation?
CF: I was a little nervous, but definitely excited. Everyone kept saying that it wouldn’t be scary, that everything would be all right, but I think that it’s something you just have to experience in order to understand. You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into or what to expect.

TLOL: What kinds of things are you looking forward to now that you are a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma?
CF: I’m so excited to continue meeting and getting to know all of my sisters. I feel like I joined a giant family, and I can’t wait to make a lot of memories.

TLOL: What is one thing you know now that you wish you knew before going Greek?
CF: I feel like every moment from recruitment until initiation is nerve racking. I really wish that I had known that it wasn’t anything to be scared about, but that I was getting involved in one of the best things in the world.
