Pi Phi Participates in Leukemia Walk + Supports Special Olympics SW

This past weekend, some sisters from the VA Zeta chapter of Pi Beta Phi participated in the "Leukemia Walk for a Cure" in Radford at Bisset Park. It was a lot of fun for sisters to get out of Blacksburg and give back, in collaboration with Delta Zeta sorority at Radford. 

Sisters were divided into teams of five and the amount of money per team all went towards Leukemia research. There was music, snack, the walk itself, bonding with sisters! Pi Phi was not only thrilled to represent our sorority outside of Blacksburg, but also to represent Virginia Tech as they went to Radford to support a great cause.

Some sisters also went to the "Special Olympics SW Regional Basketball Tournament at Virginia Tech" in Cassell Coliseum to cheer on participants! Pi Phi sisters made signs, got to see all of the action from the Special Olympics basketball tournament, and had a great time.

Pi Phi Spreads Love to New Members

Oak Lane has been extremely busy lately with the arrival of new members on bid day. Pi Beta Phi is so happy to have our new pledge class! We have been making opportunities for older members of our chapter to get to know our new members and have fun together!

On Monday the sisters of Pi Phi had a Valentine's Day Secret Gift Exchange with new members and active members alike. There was a chocolate fondue fountain, light refreshments, and lots of laughs. It was a great night of bonding and some girls revealed who they had gotten secret gifts for. This was a great way to get to know new members and just be silly with sisters.

It has already been a great semester for the sisters of Pi Beta Phi and we can't wait to participate in wonderful upcoming philanthropies with the Greek community, and gear up for our own Lilly Pulitzer sale this spring.

Happy Holidays from the Sisters of Pi Beta Phi!

It has been another great semester at Virginia Tech! The sisters of the VA Zeta chapter of Pi Beta Phi held a sisterhood event this past week to celebrate the holidays together before the stress of finals hit everyone.

Sisters enjoyed refreshments, dressed up in tacky Christmas sweaters and other holiday outfits, and watched Elf! The great room in the Pi Phi house has a big tree that the sisters living in the house put up and love taking pictures by!

We can't believe fall semester is over, and we can't wait to see our new executive board in action starting next semester! Good luck on finals, everyone! We can't wait to see everyone back in Blacksburg in January for formal recruitment!

In regards to the recent tragedy in Newtown, CT, the VA Zeta chapter of Pi Phi wishes to recognize a wonderful sister from the Connecticut Alpha chapter of Pi Beta Phi at UConn. Lauren Rousseau was a first grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School where the shooting took place, and she was one of the 26 at Sandy Hook who lost their lives in the terrible tragedy.

The sisters of Gamma Phi Beta wrapped up a great semester by passing out candy canes in front of the library on the Monday before reading day!  Who doesn't enjoy a little holiday treat while stressing over finals?

Two weeks ago, on December 4th, the girls got together for two very exciting sisterhood events at the house in Oak Lane.  Earlier in the evening was a Christmas ornament and cookie decorating event where the sisters were encouraged to wear their ugliest Christmas sweaters.  We all put our ornaments on the Gamma Phi tree, along with the ornaments made from the charter class last winter; hopefully the tradition continues and every year we can add more colorful ornaments!

Later in the evening, after the girls were all stuffed from the cookies at the Christmas party- our very own Shannon Collins, Victorias Secret PINK representative at Virginia Tech, threw a Victorias Secret fashion show viewing party for sisters at the house.  There were tons of freebies and it was a blast bonding with sisters and watching the fashion show.   

Eta Epsilon also welcomed in the new exec for the 2013 school year, all of the sisters are excited and ready to go.  It's been a great fall semester, though it's always bittersweet to see another semester go, but now it's time to prepare for formal recruitment in just a month!!! SO exciting!

A semester with Alpha Phi

What a busy, wonderful semester it has been for Alpha Phi. On September 21, the sisters of Alpha Phi held their annual Red Dress Gala. Parents came down, watched a football game, attended a brunch, and went to the Gala. There was a silent auction table where the parents and sisters placed their bids on donated items. Alpha Phi raised $10,045 to go toward their philanthropy. The night was beautiful with every sister sporting her favorite red dress. It was an event filled with dresses to die for and a cause to live for. The families enjoyed a nice dinner, meeting all of the sisters, and showing their moves off on the dance floor. 

Another great celebration for Alpha Phi was our very own sister Christine Terminello running for and winning Homecoming Queen. Every sister fully supported “Christine for Queen”, and we had a wonderful time campaigning. Booths were frequently held around campus with lots of free goodies that were given away. Walking in the Homecoming parade is an experience that every Alpha Phi sister will fondly remember. Some of us even got to ride on top of a fire truck! When the Homecoming football game finally came, every sister waited anxiously to hear the announcement. The sisters of Alpha Phi gathered together in the North end zone anxiously waiting for the announcement. When the Homecoming Queen was announced to be Christine, Alpha Phi sisters jumped up and down screaming with excitement. We are so thankful to have Christine as our sister and are excited to see what the future holds for her!

'Tis the season for Alpha Delta Pi

With the end of the semester in sight, the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi kicked off the holiday season with a joint cookie decorating party during Sisterhood Week.

Alpha Delta Pi was paired with the sisters of Alpha Chi Omega for the week and they were excited to share their sisterhood with other sisters. During the week, sisters joined up to participate in various events; most notably, the cookie decorating party at the Alpha Delta Pi house.

Sisters had a blast getting in the holiday spirit baking and decorating holiday cookies with fellow Greek women. Sisterhood events such as the cookie decorating party are a great way to meet and bond with other chapter women within the Panhellenic community.

December 1 was an exciting day for not only the Eta Pi chapter, but for chapters around the nation as Alpha Delta Pi’s newly colonized chapter at James Madison University officially initiation hundreds of new sisters.

A number of sisters made the trip to James Madison University to assists in the initiation events, much like when sisters visited during October’s Bid Day Celebration. It is always exciting to welcome new chapters, especially so close to Blacksburg. Eta Pi hopes to organize sisterhood events with the James Madison chapter in the future.

In other exciting news, sisters are preparing to undergo officer transition in the upcoming week. Both incoming and outgoing officers will undergo transition this week and a transition workshop will be held this Saturday. New officers will be officially installed during Sunday’s chapter meeting.

Sisters look forward to further preparing for spring recruitment and expanding their already strong sisterhood. 

Pi Phi Sisters Helping Sisters for Thanksgiving

The VA Zeta chapter of Pi Beta Phi at Virginia Tech in comprised of sisters from all over the United States. Not everyone can go home for fall break, or even Thanksgiving break.

No matter how long you've been in college, it can be difficult to not see your family for many months at a time. Joining any sorority helps you develop a new family at college, your home away from home.

Most recently, for Thanksgiving break, sisters took other sisters in who couldn't fly or drive home for Thanksgiving. Sisters are family and sisters bring each other into their family homes for these holidays, when what's most important is family!

Some sisters also had to work in Blacksburg during Thanksgiving break and couldn't go home. So many Pi Phis came back for the Virginia Tech vs UVA football game together to be with their sisters and cheer on our Hokies! Sisters always get season football tickets together, and win or lose, Pi Phis always have fun sitting together at games, dancing to the band's playing, and rooting for our team.

Alpha Delta Pi welcomes new sisters

The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi had a busy couple of weeks leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday. Amidst all the excitement to welcome a new pledge class in the upcoming semester, sisters prepared to welcome five new sisters who went through informal recruitment this past fall.

Sisters celebrated a third place win after participating in Alpha Chi Omega’s Mock Rock philanthropy event. The much-anticipated and heavily practiced dance was a huge hit; even the Hokie bird made an appearance! Sisters danced to many Rihanna songs to show their support for Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy to fight domestic violence.

Earlier in the month, sisters braved the chilly fall weather and handed out maroon Alpha Delta Pi cups and hot chocolate before the first Thursday night football game of the year. The cups were gone in a matter of hours, as was the hot chocolate.

Sisters celebrated their last date party of the semester with semi-formals at Top of the Stairs the night of November 10. Date parties are a great way for sisters to wind down and relax following busy weeks.

On November 14, sisters officially initiated their newest Alpha class of five members. The girls went through informal recruitment in the fall, and sisters cannot wait to get to know them better.

Upon arrival back in Blacksburg after Thanksgiving, new sister officers will begin their transition into new positions following elections. Aside from officer transitions, sisters will continue preparations for formal recruitment next semester. Sisters have plenty to do as first semester draws to a close!

A Swing and a Hit

The sisters of Kappa just wrapped up hosting our Fall philanthropy, Kappa Kaddyshack. We raised over $1000 for Reading is Fundamental and collected over 400 books to donate to local schools!

Reading is Fundamental, or RIF, is Kappa Kappa Gamma's national philanthropy that helps to promote literacy for children especially those from disadvantaged families.

From October 24-26, teams competed to win the trophy, the special green “Master’s” koozies for their organization and the title of Kappa Kaddyshack Champions.

Over the course of the three-day philanthropy we:

Watched people’s best golf swings!

And for the main event, we cheered on organizations participating in the Kappa Klassic mini-golf championship!

Pi Phi Helps Alpha Chi Raise Awareness for Domestic Violence Victims/ Fall '12 Bigs Get Their Littles

The sisters of Pi Beta Phi had a lot of fun this past week supporting our Panhellenic sisters, Alpha Chi Omega. Alpha Chi Omega's Mock Rock was Monday-Wednesday. Their philanthropy goes to support a great cause, to raise awareness and funds for victims of domestic violence. It was awesome to participate in Alpha Chi's Mock Rock!

The lip sync/dance competition of Mock Rock was so much fun! A lot of the sisters of Pi Phi participated in the dance and it showed that our hard work paid off!

Wednesday night was also a big night for five older sisters who got their littles! Four sisters took one little each and another took twins. The Fall '12 pledge class was thrilled to finally get their bigs after a long few days of getting clues about who their bigs may have been. The VA Zeta chapter Pi Beta Phi families keep getting bigger and better!

Philanthropies, Halloween, and new additions for Alpha Delta Pi!

The semester is flying by for the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi. Sisters continued to participate in various philanthropy events throughout the month of October, as they rode the success from Safari Hunt at the beginning of the month.

Most notably, sisters participated in Beta Theta Pi’s First Annual Star Search the last week of October. Sisters were enthusiastic to support Beta Theta Pi and the Wounded Warrior Project; especially after Beta Theta Pi brothers devoted much time, energy, and money for Safari Hunt.

One of the philanthropy “events” involved using Twitter to keep updated with the philanthropy scores and Tweet photos with brothers. As huge advocates of social media to spread the word, sisters loved being able to use Twitter.

Searching for a golden star and participating in a scavenger hunt were among other activities sisters of Alpha Delta Pi completed. Sisters were proud and excited to learn they had won first place in the philanthropy; tweeting the most, finding the hidden star, donating the most money, and ordering the most promotional tank tops.

Sisters found the Hokie bird as part of the scavenger hunt. 

Once final donations from the Gobblecakes percentage night are calculated, sisters will learn the exact donation amount that will be made to Ronald McDonald House in their honor. Estimations put that number around $500 to the Roanoke Ronald McDonald House.  Strong participation in philanthropic events is just one way Alpha Delta Pi promotes Greek relations around campus.

In the spirit of the month, sisters participated in Oak Lane’s annual Trick or Treat on October 26. Sisters loved dressing up, handing out candy, and celebrating Halloween early! On October 31, sisters decorated their cars and participated in the annual Trunk or Treat event downtown.

 Most recently, sisters celebrated the installation of the Christopher Newport chapter of Alpha Delta Pi on November 2.

As the semester winds down, sisters prepare for the initiation of their newest Alpha class. Five new members will be welcomed into the sister hood as a result of fall informal recruitment.
